A Potential Fire Hazard: Australian EV Owners Urged to Limit Battery Charging
Electric vehicle (EV) owners in Australia are facing a critical situation as nearly 3,000 Volvo EX30 drivers have been advised to avoid fully charging their cars. This precautionary measure is a response to a manufacturing defect that poses a serious fire risk.
The Federal Transport Department has issued a recall notice (https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-006524) for the affected Volvo EX30 electric vehicles sold in Australia in 2024. This recall impacts 2,815 vehicle owners, highlighting the potential danger.
The issue lies in the battery's cell modules, which may overheat at high charge levels due to a manufacturing flaw. While the recall emphasizes that drivers can continue using their vehicles, it strongly recommends against fully charging the battery.
To mitigate the risk, owners are advised to keep the battery charge level below 70%. Volvo has assured that affected vehicle owners will be contacted to schedule a free repair appointment once a solution is developed.
This recall follows similar actions taken by Volvo in other countries, including South Africa and the UK, where the company issued warnings and recall notices. In the UK, Volvo clarified that the issue doesn't affect all EX30 models and has not resulted in any reported injuries.
Despite the small number of affected vehicles (0.02%), Volvo is taking the matter seriously, prioritizing safety. The EX30, a top-selling electric vehicle in Australia, ranked 14th in 2025, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.
