Pritam Singh: Singapore's Political Journey and the Leader of the Opposition
The political landscape of Singapore has witnessed a significant development as Pritam Singh, a prominent figure in the country's opposition, faces a pivotal moment in his career. Singh, once the Leader of the Opposition, has been relieved of this role due to a court conviction for giving false testimony to a parliamentary committee. This decision, announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, has sparked discussions about the future of Singapore's opposition and the challenges it faces.
Singh's journey into politics began in 2011 when he became a member of parliament. He is a graduate of the National University of Singapore and King's College London, and he has been a practicing lawyer, a privilege allowed for members of parliament in Singapore. His personal life includes a marriage to a supporter of Manchester United and two daughters. As a politician, Singh is renowned for his powerful oratory skills, both in parliament and at election rallies, earning him a reputation as a rising star in the centre-left Workers' Party (WP).
In 2018, Singh took on the role of secretary-general of the WP, a position previously held by Low Thia Khiang, a veteran opposition politician. Singh acknowledged the challenge of following in Low's footsteps, as the party had made significant strides under his leadership, expanding its presence in Parliament. Since then, the WP has continued to grow under Singh's leadership, currently holding 12 out of 108 seats in Parliament, a testament to his ability to build and strengthen the party.
Singh's political career took a significant turn in 2020 when he became the country's first-ever Leader of the Opposition. This title, previously offered but rejected by his predecessor, Low, was formally established and conferred upon Singh by the Prime Minister. As opposition leader, Singh initially received a warm welcome, being featured in a selfie with the then-prime minister and included in an official delegation to Malaysia. However, his leadership was soon met with challenges, particularly regarding his handling of Raeesah Khan, a former lawmaker from his party who confessed to lying to Parliament.
During a parliamentary committee investigation, Khan alleged that Singh and other party leaders knew the truth but instructed her to 'continue with the narrative.' In February 2025, a court convicted Singh of giving false testimony, a verdict he maintained his innocence against throughout the trial. Despite his efforts, Singh lost his appeal in December, and the Leader of the House moved to remove him from his position, citing concerns about the integrity of Singapore's political system. Singh accepted the court's judgment, emphasizing his conscience's clarity regarding the charges.
The motion to remove Singh from the Leader of the Opposition role was passed by lawmakers, highlighting the delicate balance of power in Singapore's Parliament. Singh's future as an MP remains intact, but the loss of his leadership title underscores the complexities and challenges within the country's political arena.
