Anthony Joshua's Future in Boxing: A Delicate Balance
The Ring or the Recovery Room?
In the aftermath of a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of two of Anthony Joshua's closest friends and team members, the former two-time unified heavyweight champion finds himself at a crossroads. As he navigates the challenging journey of physical recovery and emotional healing, the question on everyone's mind is: when will he step back into the boxing ring?
A Delicate Balance
According to his promoter, Eddie Hearn, Joshua is currently in the midst of a delicate balance between recovery and the prospect of returning to the sport. Hearn, who has been by Joshua's side in the past week, revealed that there is no imminent talk of a comeback. Joshua's primary focus is on his physical and emotional well-being, and the promoter emphasizes the importance of respecting his time and process.
"I mean, a lot of people ask me, 'When is he going to fight again?'" Hearn said. "And the answer is, it's not even been discussed. I think it's one of those where you leave him to do what he needs to do at his time. And that is, like I said, to recover physically, to mourn, to look after the families of Sina and [Latif]. And then, if the time comes where he goes, 'I'm ready,' then he'll go back into training camp."
A Gradual Return?
Joshua, a 12-year professional and 2012 Olympic gold medalist, has been training daily, but Hearn clarifies that these sessions are more about therapy than a sign of an imminent return. The promoter believes that Joshua will eventually return to the sport, but the timing is uncertain. In fact, Joshua is currently being advised to take things slow, and he has been caught cheating a bit by hitting pads against doctor's orders.
"He shouldn't have been doing that," Hearn said. "I mean, he got told off by the physio because he does have some injuries himself that he's getting over. So, yeah, I think he's one of those where you don't really push the boxing front. It's one for Anthony to return from. I think when the time is ready, if that time even comes again, it'll come through Anthony Joshua – it won't come through me and won't come for anybody saying, 'What do you think? When do you think you want to fight again?' It's got to come from within."
A Controversial Interpretation?
But here's where it gets controversial... Joshua's decision to return to training so soon after the accident has sparked debates among boxing enthusiasts. Some argue that he should take more time to grieve and heal, while others believe that his passion for the sport will drive him back into the ring sooner rather than later. This is the part most people miss: the emotional and psychological impact of such a traumatic event on an athlete's mindset.
